Turning an idea into a story
A good story idea for a child is one picture with a question hiding in it. “A dragon who breathes bubbles instead of fire” makes a kid ask what happens when the dragon tries to light a campfire. That question is your story.
Ask your child who is in it, what goes wrong, and how it gets fixed. Three answers are enough for a bedtime story. Younger kids will give you one word at a time, and that is fine. Older kids usually want a twist at the end, so ask what nobody expected.

Questions parents ask
- How do I use a story idea with my child?
- Read the idea out loud and ask one question about it, like who is in the story or what goes wrong first. Let your child answer and build from there. You only need a beginning, one problem and a way it gets solved.
- Which age group should I pick?
- Start with your child's age, then move down a group if the ideas feel too complicated or up a group if they feel too simple. The ideas for ages 3 to 4 are a single silly picture. The ideas for ages 9 to 10 have a mystery or a choice built in.
- Can these be used as writing prompts at school?
- Yes. Each idea works as a story starter for creative writing, a drawing prompt, or a warm-up for a class story circle.
- Does the generator cost anything?
- No. It is free, needs no account and runs in your browser. If you want an idea turned into a full illustrated story, the Storybox app does that from your child's voice.
Want one about your child's own idea?
Every story in this library started as one sentence said out loud. In the Storybox app your child says the idea, and a new illustrated story comes back in about a minute.
