Ages 4 to 64 minute read10 illustrated pages

Flick was a small green caterpillar. He loved to eat big green leaves all day. Flick was happy being plain and small. But sometimes, a tiny worry stirred in his heart.

One sunny morning, Oliver came into his backyard. He saw Flick on a big green leaf. "Hello, little friend!" Oliver whispered softly.

Oliver watched Flick eat a long time. "Soon you will change," Oliver said. "You will make a chrysalis." Flick stopped eating then.

Flick knew what that meant. He would become a beautiful butterfly. But Flick liked being just a plain caterpillar. He felt a little worried about changing.

Oliver saw Flick look worried. "It is a special adventure," Oliver told him. "It is okay to be different. You will discover new things."

Flick still felt a bit scared, but he listened closely. Oliver promised, "I will wait for you. I will watch your chrysalis every day." This made Flick feel a little better.

Flick took a big breath. He decided he would be brave. He started to spin his silk under a big green leaf. Soon, he was snug inside his chrysalis.

Every morning, Oliver looked for the chrysalis. He checked on his new friend. He waited and waited for Flick to come out. Oliver was very patient.

One sunny afternoon, Oliver saw the chrysalis wiggle. Then, a tiny crack appeared! Oliver watched with excited eyes. Something wonderful was happening.

Out came Flick, not a plain caterpillar anymore, but a beautiful butterfly! He flapped his new orange and black wings. Flick felt so proud and excited. Change was not scary; it was special! Oliver smiled, so happy for his brave friend.
The end.
