Ages 4 to 64 minute read10 illustrated pages

River and Moss woke up. Snow, snow, snow was everywhere! It covered the ground like a soft, white blanket. They jumped up, so excited to play.

They put on their warm coats and boots. Outside, the world was quiet and white. River saw something new in the snow. "Look, Moss!" she said. "Whose footprints are these?"

The footprints were big. They were too big for a squirrel, but too small for a person. River wanted to know who made them. "Let's follow them!" she called.

The footprints went past a big, snowy bush. Then they turned around a small shed. River walked carefully. Moss watched every step, too.

The prints led them to a tiny hill in the yard. They walked up the hill, their boots making crunchy sounds. What could be at the top? River felt excited.

They saw a tall pine tree with green needles. The footprints went right to its base. "It must be here!" River whispered. Her heart thumped a little.

They looked under the low branches. There, a small fluffy bunny was digging in the snow! The bunny was looking for tasty berries to eat. Its big feet made the prints!

The bunny looked up. It seemed a little hungry. River felt sad for the bunny. She wanted to help her new friend. "I have an idea!" she said.

River and Moss ran inside. They found two bright orange carrots in the kitchen. Then they went back outside, quiet as a mouse.

They left the carrots near the pine tree. The bunny hopped over and began to munch! River and Moss smiled big. They made a special friend today, all thanks to the snowy footprints.
The end.
